Fibrespeed in North Wales

The Fibrespeed project has brought mega-fast cable broadband to business parks in North Wales through funding by the Welsh Assembly Government. However, we need to move to Fibrespeed Phase 2, bringing similar to communities and homes and wider business locations. This can be done via masts and cordless connections to Fibrespeed. The meeting I went to this afternoon is looking strategically at the needs and investigating suitable funding or investment by internet service providers (ISPs).
It will happen.

  1. So first we deduct all business’s in North Wales need to relocate to one of 4 business parks - not good in a recession. This will have a devastating effect on local communities and jobs, and make 4 areas boom areas.
Then we see it won’t really benefit anyone else unless local authorities and ISP's invest in mast infrastructure to give a crap 8mb at best home link to communities with nothing at present - and which ISP is going to invest in infrastructure to supply communities of 15 houses - none. Oh and Denbighshire is bankrupt so can’t see an investment from there.
And finally once it’s all completed we can look at the rest of the UK on ADSL2 16mb links within a year or two, and feel just as inadequate – and the UK can look at Korean homes with 32mb links and weep.
Another totally pointless waste of our money to benefit 4 small business parks – mind you I bet the Firbrespeed company do very well out of it. Excuse my cynicism. When will politicians in Cardiff and Whitehall take some advice from people who actually understand technology?
