Eisteddfod Genedlaethol Cymru

The idea is to go to the Eisteddfod Genedlaethol Cymru tomorrow in Bala but the forecast is 'light rain', which means a very muddy 'maes' (field), which is by no means unusual for this national cultural, bardic and musical event. The white, blue and green robes of those in the Order of the Bards (Gorsedd) are a sight to behold. Really, they are. That says nothing of the way we will look in our sou'westers, oilskins and waders or similar.

The Eisteddfod is at the very heart of Welshness, at least amongst those who speak the 'language of Heaven'. That's the Welsh language. Well, it wouldn't be ancient Greek in Bala, would it?

Anyway, we will see if we make it. I am definitely going with work on Monday because WCVA is officially opening its pavilion, known as Spardun.

Cymru am byth!

  1. The Eistedfod! A time to rejoice and appreciate all that is Cymraeg! I shall be there as well - somewhat in musfi "wisg wen", competing for the ultimate prize. The quandary is legend - T H Parry Williams had the perfect line:
    "Beth yw’r ots gennyf i am Gymru? Damwain a hap
    Yw fy mod yn ei libart yn byw" - (Do I give a stuff about my nation and where I live?).
    No slouch to poetry, these eleven couplets of Iambic Heptameter are an indication of our heritage and awareness of identity). The last couplet of this "llenyddiaeth" rings so true;

    Ac mi glywaf grafangau Cymru’n dirdynnu fy mron.
    Duw a’m gwaredo, ni allaf ddianc rhag hon (roughly translated)

    And I can hear Wales' claws torturing my breast.
    God save me, for I cannot leave this place

    Pob bendith a gwisga dy wellies!

  3. Crestfallen at the realisation of a young whippersnapper from Aberporth grasping the corona of 2009 power. Nevertheless, the real glittering prize is still available to the chosen one when it's time to sit down and reflect on the real glory. Wellies or desert boots, I'm fully subscribed and fervent - look out Bala! The "Badell Aur" has never experienced such trade. In hope that my "Book of Brilliant Things" be appreciated by all in the Babell Len - see you by the mefus a hufen stand.
